Mike Platt of ALPS Ecoscience Showcases SMASH Technology at World Biogas Association Expo 2024
On July 10th, 2024, Mike Platt, Managing Director of ALPS Ecoscience UK Ltd, delivered an insightful presentation at the World Biogas Association Expo. Platt’s talk focused on the remarkable success of the SMASH technology, developed in collaboration with Ixora Energy (now Engie), and shared the latest project results, highlighting the significant advancements achieved through this innovative technology.
The SMASH technology, which stands for substrate micronisation, assimilation, stabilisation, and hydrolysis, has proven to be a game-changer in the field of anaerobic digestion. During his presentation, Platt detailed how the collaboration with Ixora Energy has led to a 19% increase in biomethane production and a 23% reduction in feedstock costs during a ring-fenced trial using 15% of feedstock. At 10o% feeding the solution the site is projected to double its output from only 28% more feedstock. These impressive results underscore the potential of SMASH technology to revolutionise biogas production by enhancing the conversion efficiency of various feedstocks.
Highlights
A key highlight of Platt’s presentation was the discussion on the potential of SMASH technology to increase the conversion efficiency of lignocellulosic feedstocks. This advancement opens the door to a much larger portfolio of available biomass, enabling biogas plants to utilise a wider range of feedstocks more efficiently. The ability to process lignocellulosic materials effectively not only boosts gas production but also supports a more sustainable and diversified approach to biomass utilisation.
