PH Bioenergy, Digester Instability – Case Study
PH Bioenergy anaerobic digestion plant in the Midlands, UK, was able to significantly improve biogas yield and CH4 content by using Ecozyme 107™ technology from ALPS Ecoscience. Furthermore, after unavoidable equipment failure, recovery times were substantially improved.

Challenges:
PH Bioenergy is a 220kW UK-based anaerobic digestion plant, processing maize silage to produce renewable electricity & heat from biogas. Despite having good operational efficiency and long retention time, PH Bioenergy were interested to explore ways to: ,
• Increase gas yield
• Reduce feeding volumes
• Reduce feedstock costs

Solution:
After taking digestate samples and completing a production lifecycle analysis report, Alps Ecoscience proposed a solution incorporating waste pre-treatment and patented reactor additives which:
• Improved the solubility of waste matter
• Increased the overall rate of digestate decomposition
• Reduced the volume of residual solids

Commercial benefits:
ALPS Ecoscience delivered a solution that used no more plant power, produced more gas, higher quality fertiliser and a lower volume of dry waste (volatile solids basis) left in the reactor after the AD process by more than 20%. The reduction in residual solids alone increased throughput, enhancing A.C. Shropshire’s overall organic loading rate (OLR) by over 40% and providing greater than a 30% increase in revenue.

A lab test is one of the most effective ways to better understand an AD plant’s current performance and its full potential. If you’re uncertain of where your AD production can be improved why not request one of our free lab tests. Our biologists with analyse a sample, benchmark it and highlight available improvements and our consultants can suggest a managed service plan.
