Feedstock characterisation
Feedstock characterisation
Alps Ecoscience help optimise anaerobic digester throughput to increase plant performance. A key component in our success has been the development of techniques for feedstock characterisation and pre-treatment. Helping clients determine the appropriate balance in the recipe to maximise revenue and minimise digester instability.
Mass balance and feedstock recipe design
Mass balance and feedstock recipe design
One individual feedstock samples have been analysed and characterised ALPS use a mass balance model to determine the feedstock performance. These models are adapted to an individual plant process design to create a picture of the expected performance of a feedstock in operational conditions. Using our feedstock database ALPS can determine the optimal combination of available feedstocks, creating dynamic model which take account of gate fees, operating costs, gas revenue and incentives as well as the interaction of the feedstocks and potential inhibition. Once an optimal recipe is determined ALPS can also model output variations for additional process steps such as pre-treatment or multi stage fermentation. Feedstock characterisation provides a unique insight into the biological potential of a feedstock but also an understanding of how it performs in combination with others. When certain ratios of feedstock combine, they may inhibit the total gas potential, negating individual gate fee benefit. ALPS Ecoscience feedstock characterisation helps feedstock buyers and site operators achieve a balance between gate fees and digester stability for consistent gas output.
Biogas Feedstock Pre-treatment
Biogas Feedstock Pre-treatment
A highly lignocellulosic feedstock such as maize or crop residues can be difficult to fully digest during the traditional AD process. Resulting in sub-optimal digester performance; lower gas yield, longer HRT and lower digestate quality. The fibrous structure of most lignocellulosic feedstock requires a combination of technical solutions; both mechanical and biochemical to access their sugar and starch.
ALPS Ecoscience help site operators maximise the potential of complex feedstock by designing specific pre-treatment protocols. These accelerate substrate decomposition and ensure complete digestion resulting in greater gas yield and a higher quality of digestate in lower volumes. Learn more…
