Alps Ecoscience’s Eco Smash Ethanol Fermentation Project: Pioneering Green Ethanol and Biogas Production from Organic Waste for the UK’s DESNZ

Biological Engineers at Alps Ecoscience, a leading sustainable technology innovator, are making progress in their Eco Smash Ethanol Fermentation project for the UK government’s Department of Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ). The Energy Entrepreneurs Fund 9 project, aims to develop a novel fermentation & distillation, process within a contiguous anaerobic digestion system, enabling the production of both green ethanol and biogas from organic waste. This innovative project is a continuation of ALPS’ project development pathway, identifying ways that multi-stage Anaerobic Digestion can contribute to a more sustainable and low-carbon future. Alps Ecoscience’s commitment to environmental preservation and renewable energy solutions has resulted in promising progress in recent years. Yielding, innovations in green hydrogen production from municipal solid waste and a unique pretreatment for lignocellulosic biomass which increases energy conversion efficiency. Both of which are now being developed commercially.

Transforming Organic Waste into Green Ethanol and Biogas:

The Eco Smash Ethanol Fermentation project seeks to utilise organic waste as a valuable resource for the production of green ethanol and biogas. Since January 2023, Alps Ecoscience has been working to develop a unique fermentation & distillation process within a contiguous anaerobic digestion system. This integrated approach enables the conversion of organic waste into two valuable energy products: ethanol, a renewable fuel, and biogas, a versatile energy source rich in methane. By extracting multiple forms of energy from the same feedstock, the project maximises resource utilisation and reduces waste.

Innovative Contiguous Anaerobic Digestion System:

A key breakthrough in the project is the development of an innovative contiguous anaerobic digestion system that optimises the fermentation process. Maximising each step before transition to the next and creating a value chain where more materials can be extracted. This multi-stage system integrates the fermentation of organic waste with the production of ethanol and biogas in a continuous and efficient manner. By carefully controlling environmental conditions, such as temperature, pH, and retention time, Alps Ecoscience is aspiring to achieve a viable amount of green bioethanol and increased biogas production without increasing the input volume of organic waste.

Green Ethanol as a Sustainable Fuel:

The production of green ethanol from organic waste offers numerous environmental and economic benefits. Ethanol derived from renewable sources serves as a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels, reducing carbon emissions and promoting a cleaner transportation sector. Green ethanol can be blended with gasoline or used as a standalone fuel in vehicles, contributing to the UK’s net-zero emissions targets. Ethanol is also a raw material for the production of acids and solutions in chemical manufacture. This green version will directly replace ethanol derived from fossil fuels. By repurposing organic waste, the Eco Smash Ethanol Fermentation project addresses waste management challenges, reduces biogenic CO2 and fosters a circular economy by transforming waste into a valuable resource.

Biogas: A Versatile Energy Source:

The contiguous anaerobic digestion system under development by Alps Ecoscience not only produces green ethanol but also generates biogas or RNG as its also known. Biogas, primarily composed of methane, is a versatile energy source that can be used for electricity generation, heating, or as a renewable natural gas fuel. If successful this dual output of ethanol and biogas further enhances the project’s sustainability and economic viability, potentially providing flexible options for energy utilisation and offering  carbon negative alternative to  fossil fuels.

Collaborative Partnerships and Knowledge Exchange:

Alps Ecoscience recognises the importance of collaboration and knowledge exchange in driving innovation. The Eco Smash Ethanol Fermentation project actively engages with leading academic institutions on latest research and government agencies on policy and Net Zero strategy. As well as working with waste management companies and biogas industry experts to insure commercial alignment. By fostering collaborative partnerships, Alps Ecoscience leverages collective expertise to optimise the R&D process, enhance contiguous anaerobic digestion manufacturing systems, and explore new avenues for sustainable waste management practices.

Future Outlook:

The Eco Smash Ethanol Fermentation project is now at the half way stage, with focus moving from functional testing to continuous production. Results will be released at the end of the year and if commercially viable, Alps Ecoscience envisions a future where green ethanol and biogas production from organic waste become integral components of the UK’s renewable energy landscape. If so the company aims to scale up production capabilities, further optimise the fermentation process, and expand the process utilisation to more diverse organic waste and biomass streams. By doing so, Alps Ecoscience strives to contribute significantly to the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero’s goals, enabling the UK to achieve its renewable energy targets while reducing carbon emissions and enhancing energy security
