The New Black Gold of 2025: ALPS Ecoscience’s SMASH Technology for Biogas Feedstock Pretreatment
In the old economy, crude oil was hailed as black gold. Today, in the sustainable energy economy, a new black gold is taking centre stage: a pretreated liquid feedstock that turbo-powers anaerobic digesters and maximises biogas production.
As we move into 2025, the role of anaerobic digestion (AD) feedstock pretreatment continues to grow as one of the most impactful advancements in biogas production. By releasing more gas per kg of volatile solids, pretreatment technologies like SMASH are transforming profitability for biogas operators.
“Think of it as the AD equivalent of fitting a turbo charger to a car,” says Wade McRoberts, Technical Director at ALPS Ecoscience. “The uplift in digester performance is so significant that it can redefine the business model for many operators.”
The Science Behind Biogas Feedstock Pretreatment
Effective feedstock preparation enhances digester stability, increases methane yield, and reduces residual solids, all while improving the nutrient quality of digestate. This translates to additional revenue—often in the thousands of pounds daily—and results that become apparent within weeks.
For uncapped gas-to-grid AD plants, this means a significant profit boost. Fixed-capacity sites also benefit through feedstock cost savings and reduced haulage requirements.
The SMASH Pretreatment Process
ALPS Ecoscience’s patented SMASH technology optimises feedstocks using a combination of mechanical, biological, chemical and thermal processes. This produces a homogenous, nutrient-rich solution ideal for anaerobic digestion.
Step 1: Feedstock Classification Study
Every successful pretreatment starts with a detailed feedstock analysis to identify the best protocol for the digester configuration. For high-lignocellulose materials, advanced methods like hydrodynamic cavitation (HDC) break down fibrous structures, unlocking bioenergy potential.
HDC generates powerful micro-shock waves that disrupt solid materials, reduce particle sizes, and increase surface areas, enabling microbiological access to sugars and starches. This process facilitates the use of high-lignin feedstocks and mixed food waste sources, and in combination with ALPS proprietary technologies transforms them into a smooth, dark liquid optimised for digestion.
Step 2: Customised Pretreatment
For simpler feedstocks, mechanical agitation may suffice. However, for complex protein mixes, adding specific catalysts and nutrients enhances digestion and accelerates biogas output. The SMASH process adapts to each feedstock’s unique requirements, ensuring complete digestion and maximum gas release.
Financial and Operational Gains
For AD plants, SMASH technology offers remarkable value through feedstock optimisation. Operators can generate more gas from the same volume of feedstock or reduce organic loading rates for cost savings. Typical results include incremental gas revenue gains of £5,000 to £10,000 per day for medium to large-sized plants with off-take capacity. Those already maximising their CHP output, can see a 15% to 20% annual saving in feed.
2024 Milestones and 2025 Outlook
ALPS Ecoscience reached a pivotal milestone in 2024 with the success of the SMASH Project, demonstrating significant biogas yield improvements at its commercial demonstration facility. These results solidify SMASH as a game-changing solution for the industry.
Additionally, ALPS Ecoscience and its partner Ixora Energy (now Engie UK) received recognition from the Anaerobic Digestion and Bioresources Association (ADBA) for their innovative demonstration project, further establishing their leadership in sustainable biogas solutions.
Innovation Through Research
The SMASH technology represents the culmination of years of research by ALPS Ecoscience. Reflecting on this journey, Mike Platt, Managing Director, shared:
“When I entered this industry, I was struck by how capital-intensive it was, with returns tied to assets. Building bigger tanks or churning substrates faster wasn’t the answer. We needed a way to realise more gas conversion from existing feedstocks. SMASH achieves that, offering operators a high-return, low-investment solution to boost profitability and increase return on assets.”
Take Action in 2025
With its proven ability to increase gas output, reduce costs, and enhance profitability, SMASH technology is poised to redefine biogas production in 2025. Whether you’re scaling up operations or optimising existing processes, SMASH provides the tools to succeed in the circular economy.
