Biogas Feedstock Pre-treatment
Biogas Feedstock Pre-treatment
A highly lignocellulosic feedstock such as maize or crop residues can be difficult to fully digest during the traditional AD process. Resulting in sub-optimal digester performance; lower gas yield, longer HRT and lower digestate quality. The fibrous structure of most lignocellulosic feedstock requires a combination of technical solutions; both mechanical and biochemical to access their sugar and starch. Even then hydrolysis can be a limiting step to full degradation with these complex feedstocks. The key to unlocking their potential and maximising energy release is increased conversion efficiency where a higher proportion of the total material becomes available for gas production.
Alps Ecoscience help site operators maximise the potential of complex feedstock by designing specific pre-treatment protocols. These accelerate substrate decomposition and ensure complete digestion resulting in greater gas yield and a higher quality of digestate in lower volumes.

SMASH is the name for Alps Ecoscience’ modular technologies that increase biomass conversion during anaerobic digestion. Helping you to convert more of your feedstock to gas to make more money.
SMASH is the latest innovation to emerge in advanced anaerobic digestion. Derived from bio-hydrogen research, SMASH increases conversion efficiency and widens the portfolio of available feedstocks to improve the ROI on new or existing biogas plant assets. It was invented by Alps Ecoscience who have demonstrated over 30% increase in biomethane production at the same volume of feedstock.
Biogas plants with SMASH integrations will have the potential to define new performance levels for the biogas industry. As well as expand into green hydrogen production for future gas to grid upgrading, district heating or vehicle fuel supply.
SMASH is a modular solution that can be extended to include ammonia stripping, nutrient recovery and CO2 capture. It is containerised and has a small footprint for ease of integration to existing plants. Modules can also be deployed individually for incremental gains. All solutions are available as a fully managed service (OPEX model) or a technology integration (CAPEX). Learn more…
