Case Study: Enhancing Anaerobic Digestion Performance with enzyme addition at PH Bioenergy, UK

Problem:

PH Bioenergy, a 220kW anaerobic digestion plant located in the Midlands, UK, specialises in processing maize silage to generate renewable electricity and heat through biogas production. Despite its operational efficiency and lengthy retention time, PH Bioenergy sought to enhance digestion performance to increase gas yield and reduce feeding volumes, aiming to minimise operational costs.

Approach:

To address these challenges, PH Bioenergy adopted Ecozyme 107™ enzyme technology from ALPS Ecoscience a solution specifically designed to optimise digestion efficiency in biogas plants. This enzyme-based solution accelerates the breakdown of organic compounds in the feedstock, leading to increased biogas production with higher methane (CH4) content.

Outcomes:

Upon implementing Ecozyme 107™, PH Bioenergy observed significant improvements within days. Biogas production increased, enabling a reduction in feedstock of 15% over the treatment period. The average gas yield rose by 22% compared to the previous month, indicating enhanced biological conversion efficiency in biogas generation. Additionally, the CH4 content in the biogas increased by 0.5-1.0%-p, as evidenced by on-site gas analysis and reduced biogas consumption for the same electrical output at the Combined Heat and Power (CHP) unit.

Conclusion:

By leveraging Ecozyme 107™ enzyme technology, PH Bioenergy achieved notable enhancements in digestion efficiency, leading to increased biogas yield, reduced feedstock costs, and improved resilience against equipment failures. This biological solution from ALPS Ecoscience not only boosted productivity and profitability but also contributed to the plant’s sustainability goals by optimising resource utilisation in bioenergy circular economy.
