ALPS Ecoscience Shines at ADBA Awards and WBA Expo

July 10, 2024, marked a significant day for ALPS Ecoscience as it presented the results of its pioneering SMASH project at the World Biogas Association Expo (WBA) and attended the ADBA awards. This combined event, held annually, is a convergence of industry leaders, innovators, and exhibitors who are at the forefront of the biogas sector. ALPS Ecoscience took to the Expo stage to showcase the impressive outcomes of the SMASH project, a collaboration that has the potential to revolutionise feedstock conversion efficiency and biogas plant production volume.

The SMASH Project: A Breakthrough in Biogas

“SMASH” stands for substrate micronisation, assimilation, stabilisation, and hydrolysis, encapsulating ALPS’ patented technology. SMASH is the latest advancement in anaerobic digestion, emerging from bio-hydrogen research to enhance fermentation efficiency and diversify feedstock options, thereby improving the return on investment for biogas plants. ALPS Ecoscience has successfully demonstrated the capability to ferment bio-hydrogen while simultaneously doubling the biomethane yield from residual feedstock.

Enhanced Conversion Efficiency

At the heart of SMASH deployments is a patented process that includes pretreatment and dual-stage fermentation to extract more gas from cellulosic materials, which typically remain undigested in conventional anaerobic digestion processes. This process allows clients to significantly increase biogas quality and yield, use less feedstock, or switch to a more cost-effective mix. SMASH is a containerised solution, making it adaptable for retrofitting into existing biogas plants as well as new builds. The SMASH project,  has been a collaborative effort between Alps Ecoscience and Ixora Energy (now Engie) , combining their expertise to tackle some of the most pressing challenges in the industry.

At the WBA Expo, the team from ALPS Ecoscience explained the innovative biological engineering process and technologies employed in the SMASH project. These include cutting-edge techniques for biomass pre-treatment and hydrolysis, which significantly increase the yield of biogas from organic waste. The presentation was met with enthusiasm and interest from attendees, highlighting the project’s potential to make a substantial impact on the future of renewable energy from biomass.

ADBA Awards Dinner: A Night of Recognition and Celebration

The excitement didn’t end at the Expo. Later that evening, the ADBA Awards Dinner provided another platform for ALPS Ecoscience and its partner Ixora Energy to shine. The SMASH project was highly commended in recognition of its groundbreaking achievements. This prestigious accolade was jointly received by Alps Ecoscience and Ixora Energy, marking a testament to their successful collaboration.

The award ceremony was a memorable occasion, with the team from Frogmary Green Farm Biogas Plant, representing Ixora Energy, joining ALPS Ecoscience on stage to accept the award. Their joint effort and dedication to advancing biogas technology were acknowledged and celebrated by industry peers and stakeholders.

A Collaborative Success

The recognition of the SMASH project at the ADBA Awards underscores the importance of collaboration in driving innovation. Both ALPS Ecoscience and Ixora Energy have brought their unique strengths and expertise to the table, resulting in a project that not only addresses current biogas plant production challenges but also sets a new benchmark for future new build projects.

Special thanks were extended to the team from Frogmary Green Farm for their unwavering support and active participation in the project. Their contributions have been instrumental in the project’s success, and their presence on stage to accept the award was a proud moment for all involved.

Looking Ahead

As ALPS Ecoscience continues to push the boundaries of what’s possible in the biogas sector, the success of the SMASH project serves as both an inspiration and a foundation for future R&D. The recognition received at the World Biogas Association Expo and the ADBA Awards is a testament to the hard work and innovation of the entire team.

With the momentum gained from these accolades, ALPS Ecoscience is well-positioned to lead the way in the technological advancement of biogas production, helping to position anaerobic digestion it as key contributor to the global transition to renewable energy.

The events of July 10, 2024, will be remembered as a milestone for ALPS Ecoscience and its partners. The presentation of the SMASH project at the World Biogas Association Expo and the subsequent commendation at the ADBA Awards are just the beginning. As the company looks to the future, it remains committed to pioneering new technologies and fostering collaborations that will shape the landscape of renewable energy for years to come.
