AD Research and Innovation Award 2024 Shortlist announced
ALPS Ecoscience and Ixora Energy (now Engie) are pleased to be shortlisted for an Innovation award by The Anaerobic Digestion and Bioresources Association (ADBA). The “AD Research and Innovation Awards” for 2024 has recognised ALPS collaborative effort with Ixora Energy Limited in demonstrating Dark Fermentation of agricultural feedstocks at commercial scale. The result is a new means of producing biohydrogen as well as boosted conversion rates of biomethane. The innovative technology is called SMASH and it might just rewrite traditional anaerobic digestion industry operating models. Enabling biogas plants to extract significantly more gas from the same amount of feedstock.
AD Research and Innovation Awards for 2024
The ADBA Awards 2024, hosted by the Anaerobic Digestion and Bioresources Association (ADBA), celebrate innovation and excellence in the field of anaerobic digestion and bioresources. The awards showcase outstanding achievements and advancements in the industry as well as recognising individuals, research projects, and sustainable practices. You can view all the ADBA awards categories and the shortlists here. Among the shortlisted nominees for a research and innovation award is ALPS Ecoscience, recognised for its groundbreaking SMASH technology in its joint project with Ixora Energy.
What is SMASH?
“SMASH”, an acronym meaning substrate micronisation, assimilation, stabilisation, and hydrolysis, refers to ALPS patented technology. SMASH is the latest innovation to emerge in advanced anaerobic digestion. Derived from bio-hydrogen research, SMASH increases conversion efficiency during fermentation and widens the portfolio of available feedstocks to improve the ROI on new or existing biogas plant assets. It was invented by ALPS Ecoscience who has demonstrated the ability to ferment biohydrogen whilst simultaneously doubling the biomethane yield from the residual feedstock.
Enhanced Conversion Efficiency
The foundation of all SMASH deployments is a patented process evolving pretreatment and dual stage fermentation to extract more gas from cellulosic material which normally remains undigested in the AD process. Accessing this material enables clients to significantly increase biogas quality and yield, use less feedstock or change diet to a cheaper mix. SMASH is a containerised solution, so it be retrofitted into most existing biogas plants as well as new builds.
SMASH represents a significant innovation in anaerobic digestion technology. Biogas plants with SMASH integrations will have the potential to define new biomethane output levels for the biogas industry. As well as choose to expand into green hydrogen production as markets for gas to grid injection, district heating or vehicle fuel supply emerge.
